Accessibility And disability in education

WHat's the Problem?

As Social Science Assistant Dean (equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization, or EDI-D), Dr. Clark noticed that disability was often left out of discussions of EDI-D.

Methodology

Dr. Clark led a team that included Dr. Walsh and student researchers Anika Sebudde, Kate Mahoney, and Sam Schneider. Over the summer of 2022, the team carried out research to study student experience with accessibility at University of Western Ontario (UWO). The student researchers first canvased social media to better understand how UWO students used social media to navigate accessibility on campus. Read more about that here. The team used the data collected to create an anonymous survey. As well, the student researchers conducted a series of interviews with volunteers. The goal of this research was to identify trends among students, in order to come up with teaching practices that lecturers can use to make their classes more accessible.

Outcome

  • An article published in The Conversation
  • A talk at a conference on how to make education more accessible
  • A publication in Culture
